US Approves $500M Military Aid for Taiwan, Boosting Defense Industry Sales

Published on

The United States House of Representatives has given the green light to a new appropriations bill, earmarking US$500 million for Foreign Military Financing (FMF) dedicated to Taiwan. This legislative move also includes measures to bolster Taiwan’s involvement in international organizations. The bill secured passage with a narrow 217-209 vote, outlining a total of US$47.32 billion in discretionary spending for the upcoming fiscal year. This figure presents a reduction from the current budget, aligning with the administration’s revised spending priorities.

While the overall funding has experienced cuts, the bill continues to ensure support for significant US allies such as Taiwan, Israel, Jordan, and Egypt. This financial backing is part of a broader strategy to address challenges posed by nations like China and Iran, as well as other potential adversaries. A central component of the legislation is the directive for the US Secretary of State, working alongside the Defense Secretary, to expedite the delivery of defense-related equipment and services to Taiwan.

The appropriations bill also makes specific financial commitments, allocating a minimum of US$4 million to the Global Cooperation and Training Framework. This initiative is facilitated through the American Institute in Taiwan, aiming to enhance collaboration and training efforts. Additionally, the legislation includes a provision that bars the use of federal funds to create or display maps that misrepresent Taiwan’s territorial borders or its system of governance.

The passage of this bill by the House marks a significant step, but the process is not yet complete. It must still be considered and approved by the US Senate before it can be presented to the president for final endorsement. This legislative journey underscores the ongoing commitment of the United States to support Taiwan amidst a complex geopolitical landscape.
