The Ministry of National Defense has set up a dedicated Artificial Intelligence (AI) Office to explore and integrate emerging technologies into Taiwan’s defense systems. The new office, officially established under the ministry’s headquarters in Taipei on October 1, aims to enhance capabilities in image and video detection, cybersecurity, and anti-hacking operations, according to Lieutenant General Huang Wen-chi, Director of the Department of Strategic Planning.
Huang said the scope of AI’s use for military purposes, including potential combat applications, would depend on the maturity and advancement of the technology. The move underscores Taiwan’s growing focus on digital defense transformation amid rising global emphasis on AI-driven military systems.
Defense Minister Wellington Koo stated that the AI office is currently operating on a trial basis, serving as a coordination platform for various defense units’ technological requirements. He added that there is no set timeline yet for when the trial phase will conclude or when the office will become fully operational.
