The move into administration was initiated by owner Dejphon Chansiri, whose tenure has been described by fans as one of “financial mismanagement.” The club is facing significant debts, including $pounds{}$1 million to HMRC, and has failed to pay players and staff on time in five of the last seven months.
Fans reacted with mixed emotions, calling it a “bittersweet” day. While relieved to see Chansiri’s exit, signified by the removal of his name from stadium seats, the points penalty is a devastating blow. The Supporters Trust said, “It needn’t have ended this way.”
The club is now in the hands of administrator Begbies Traynor. Their priority is to find a new owner “as swiftly as possible” and protect creditors. They will attempt to sell the club and Hillsborough stadium as a combined package.
Manager Henrik Pedersen, however, is not conceding defeat. He told his squad they must be “a new Sheffield Wednesday with an old heart” and that he has “a big belief we can survive.” He called the administration a “fresh restart” after months of unbearable uncertainty.
