In a significant leap for its space program, China has successfully launched the Long March 12B carrier rocket on its inaugural flight. This achievement underscores the nation’s advancing capabilities in space exploration. The rocket, which took off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, achieved its mission by reaching the designated orbit and deploying the latest batch of Spacesail Constellation communication satellites.

The Long March 12B, towering at about 72 meters, currently stands as China’s most robust single-body rocket. This two-stage launch vehicle boasts 10 engines powered by liquid oxygen and kerosene, together generating around 800 metric tons of thrust at liftoff. With this power, it can transport payloads exceeding 20 tons into low-Earth orbit, marking a significant enhancement in China’s ability to launch substantial payloads.

Since the development of the Long March 12B commenced in September 2024, engineers have integrated cutting-edge technologies to elevate its performance and efficiency. These advancements encompass high-performance propulsion components, lightweight structural materials, improved fuel management systems, and autonomous flight-control software designed to handle any anomalies during flight. Looking ahead, engineers are also planning tests aimed at recovering and reusing the rocket’s first-stage booster, which could lead to a reusable version of the Long March 12B in the foreseeable future.

The launch also contributes to the expansion of the Spacesail Constellation, a satellite network in low-Earth orbit intended to deliver high-speed global broadband internet access. With over 160 satellites already in orbit, the project is ambitiously targeting the deployment of more than 10,000 satellites by 2030. This advancement not only signifies progress in China’s space endeavors but also highlights its aspirations to provide widespread satellite internet coverage across the globe.
