From Allies to Adversaries: The Bitter History Fueling Musk’s Lawsuit

Published on

The lawsuit filed by Elon Musk’s xAI against Apple and OpenAI is more than a legal dispute; it’s the culmination of a Silicon Valley friendship that soured into a bitter public rivalry. To understand the lawsuit, one must understand the history between Musk and Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, the company they built together.
They co-founded OpenAI in 2015 with a shared mission to develop artificial intelligence safely and for the benefit of humanity. However, their paths diverged over strategy and control, leading to Musk’s acrimonious departure in 2018 after a failed bid to take over. Since then, Musk has transformed from a founding father into the company’s most prominent and aggressive critic.
The current lawsuit, which accuses OpenAI and its partner Apple of monopolistic practices, is the latest front in this ongoing war. Musk alleges their deal to integrate ChatGPT into Apple’s OS is an illegal move to stifle competition. This legal claim is intertwined with his personal crusade against OpenAI’s shift to a for-profit model, which he views as a betrayal of their founding ethos.
OpenAI and Altman have consistently portrayed Musk as a jealous former partner, unable to accept their success without him. They’ve called his previous legal actions petty and vindictive, and have characterized this new lawsuit as more “harassment.” This deeply personal history will undoubtedly be a central theme as this high-stakes legal drama unfolds.
