Taipei’s Mayor, Chiang Wan-an, has unveiled an ambitious plan to revamp the city’s educational landscape with a focus on artificial intelligence. Allocating NT$9.2 billion (US$288 million), the four-year initiative aims to equip classrooms with modern technology and prepare students for a future dominated by AI. The comprehensive plan promises to introduce smart screens in every classroom and enhance digital learning platforms with AI-driven assistants, ensuring that the educational environment keeps pace with technological advancements.

A significant component of this initiative is the establishment of an AI Education Center at Beitou Shilin Technology Park. This center will serve as a hub for teacher training, curriculum development, and fostering partnerships between educational institutions and industry players. The city’s strategy includes integrating more robotics, drones, and AI technologies into the classroom, providing students with hands-on experience in these cutting-edge fields. Additionally, the initiative seeks to broaden opportunities for students to work with advanced edge computing systems that feature graphics processing units (GPUs).

Beyond merely teaching AI skills, the initiative emphasizes the importance of responsible technology use and aims to enhance students’ digital literacy and awareness of data privacy. The upgraded learning platforms are designed to not only support independent learning among students but also to alleviate some of the administrative burdens that teachers face, such as exam grading.

Officials have highlighted that this initiative represents a significant investment in the future of Taipei’s education system, positioning the city as a leader in integrating AI into educational frameworks. By equipping classrooms with the necessary tools and resources, the city hopes to cultivate a generation of students who are not only technologically adept but also mindful of the ethical implications and responsibilities that come with the use of AI.
