Thinner, Lighter, Faster: Apple Unpacks its iPhone 17 and Air Models

Published on

Apple’s annual September event centered on a clear theme: refinement. The company unveiled its new iPhone 17 lineup, led by the strikingly thin iPhone Air, with a focus on making its flagship products thinner, lighter, and faster. CEO Tim Cook introduced the 5.6mm iPhone Air as a monumental achievement in design, setting the tone for a showcase of iterative but impressive hardware upgrades.
The iPhone Air, priced at $999, is constructed from durable “spacecraft titanium” and features a 6.5-inch display. Apple made a point to reassure customers that its slimness does not compromise its strength or performance, as it packs the same powerful internals and fast-charging battery as the standard models. The entire iPhone 17 family also benefits from camera improvements, including a new dual-filming mode.
The “lighter” aspect was also reflected in the new color palette for the iPhone Air, which the company said was chosen to “evoke lightness.” This focus on aesthetics and feel is a classic Apple strategy, appealing to consumers who value premium industrial design. The new models also come with increased storage, a practical upgrade for users with growing digital libraries.
Beyond the iPhone, other products were made smarter and more capable. The AirPods Pro 3 gained a significant new feature with live translation, while the Apple Watch Series 11 was enhanced with powerful health tools for monitoring hypertension and sleep. Preorders for the new iPhone begin Friday, with availability on September 19.
