Late Verbruggen Save Denies Haaland and City Victory

Published on

Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen produced a crucial late save to deny Erling Haaland and earn his team a 1-1 draw against Manchester City on Wednesday. The result extends City’s winless run to three Premier League matches and leaves them five points behind leaders Arsenal.
Manchester City took the lead in the 41st minute when Haaland stepped up to convert a penalty awarded after Diego Gomez fouled Jeremy Doku in the box. The decision was confirmed by VAR, and Haaland made no mistake from 12 yards. The goal was his 150th for Manchester City, ended a three-game scoring drought, and took his Premier League tally for the season to 20.
The second half saw City push for a second goal that would have sealed the victory. Bernardo Silva came close when he intercepted a poor Brighton pass, but his shot struck the post and bounced clear. The match became heated when City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma and Brighton’s Maxim De Cuyper engaged in a confrontation, with both players shown yellow cards.
Brighton drew level on the hour mark through a quality finish from Kaoru Mitoma. The Japanese international collected a pass from wide, took a touch at the edge of the box, and curled a low shot into the far corner, giving Donnarumma no chance of making a save.
The visitors took command after equalizing, dictating the pace and creating several chances to claim all three points. Mitoma was instrumental in Brighton’s best opportunity, finding Gomez inside the penalty area, but the midfielder couldn’t convert and Donnarumma made the save. Mitoma’s rebound attempt from a tight angle hit the post. The decisive moment came in injury time when Haaland broke clear and found himself one-on-one with Verbruggen, but the Dutch goalkeeper produced a superb save to preserve Brighton’s hard-earned point.
