When it comes to selecting the appropriate internal power supply, many factors beyond the rated wattage must be taken into account to ensure safe and reliable operation. Key considerations include equipment voltage, operating current, inrush current, environmental conditions, cooling needs, and protection features. Before making a purchase, it’s essential to review the equipment’s datasheet and connection requirements, calculating the total load of all components that might operate simultaneously. A practical power reserve of around 20–30% is advisable; for instance, equipment that uses 600 W under normal conditions may need a power supply rated between 720–780 W, considering startup requirements and operating conditions.

Inrush current is especially critical for devices like motors, pumps, fans, and drives, which demand significantly more current at startup than during regular operation. The chosen power supply must handle these temporary surges without causing voltage drops or unexpected shutdowns. Selecting the right voltage is equally important. Common DC output voltages include 5 V, 12 V, 24 V, and 48 V. Each serves different applications: 5 VDC is often used for sensors and microcontrollers, 12 VDC suits cameras and network equipment, 24 VDC is popular in industrial controls, and 48 VDC is ideal for high-power applications where reducing current and cable losses is crucial. Voltage must align with equipment needs, with cable length and voltage drop taken into account, especially in low-voltage systems.

Various applications demand different internal power systems. A standard power supply converts incoming electrical power into the DC voltage required by equipment, while a UPS provides backup during interruptions, and batteries offer energy for autonomous operation. DC-DC converters are necessary when converting one DC voltage to another, such as from 24 V to 5 V for sensitive electronics. The selection should focus on the equipment’s operational mode, required backup time, and electrical characteristics rather than solely on rated capacity. For battery-powered systems, evaluating voltage, capacity, discharge characteristics, temperature, and cycle life is vital. Lithium-ion batteries are common in compact equipment due to their high energy density, although their lifespan heavily depends on temperature, charging conditions, and discharge depth.

UPS efficiency is a key factor, with typical efficiency reaching 95–99%, depending on the model and load. Efficiency should be assessed under the actual operating load rather than merely relying on the maximum rating. For critical equipment, switching time, output waveform, battery condition, and protection against overtemperature, overload, and short circuits are significant considerations. The power supply must also operate within the equipment’s environmental conditions, as heat buildup in an enclosed cabinet can affect component life and reliability. Ensuring ventilation openings are unobstructed and preventing dust accumulation on fans or filters is essential, particularly in installations near heat sources or exposed to sunlight. Evaluating temperature, humidity, vibration, and the stability of the external electrical network during selection is crucial, with testing under both minimum and maximum expected operating temperatures offering a realistic performance assessment.

Safety features should be assessed before installation, including protection against overload, short circuits, overvoltage, and overheating, which can prevent equipment damage and enhance system reliability. Compliance with electrical safety standards, like IEC 62368-1, may be necessary depending on the application and product category. Manufacturers should provide the appropriate technical documentation and certification for the intended market. LED applications require careful attention to output voltage, strip length, current requirements, and cable voltage drop, as an incorrectly sized power supply can lead to flickering or inconsistent brightness. IP20-rated switching power supplies are suitable for protected indoor installations without water exposure, offering protection against solid objects larger than 12.5 mm but not against water or dust. Therefore, they should be installed in suitable electrical cabinets or environments, away from moisture. Choosing an internal power supply should start with a clear understanding of the equipment’s voltage, total power consumption, and startup requirements, alongside a reserve of 20–30% for operating variations, ensuring reliable long-term performance.
