During a recent address at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Plus Meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to establish a balanced and organized multipolar world. He advocated for a more equitable system of global governance, highlighting the importance of granting greater representation and influence to countries from the Global South in international matters. President Xi noted that the ascendance of these nations is reshaping the global power dynamics and underscored the irreversible nature of this shift towards multipolarity.

President Xi outlined principles such as sovereign equality, mutual respect, and multilateralism as fundamental to international relations. He called for the establishment of equal rights, opportunities, and rules for all nations, regardless of their size, strength, or wealth. Stressing the importance of adhering to international norms and the rule of law, he urged major powers to honor these principles. Furthermore, Xi emphasized the need to bolster the role of the United Nations, advocating for more inclusive participation in addressing international issues.

In his speech, Xi encouraged countries to prioritize development and maintain openness and cooperation. He identified the need to bridge gaps in digital technology and artificial intelligence, ensuring that technological progress benefits a wider range of nations. Xi’s remarks resonated with the theme of enhancing global cooperation and reducing disparities, reflecting China’s strategic priorities in international diplomacy.

Highlighting the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s 25-year history, Xi presented it as a model of successful collaboration among countries with diverse political systems, cultures, and stages of development. He called for stronger partnerships within the SCO Plus framework and advocated for increased cooperation across Asia and Europe, particularly through high-quality Belt and Road initiatives. This emphasis on connectivity and collaboration aligns with China’s broader objectives of fostering regional integration and economic development.

Xi’s comments come a year after he introduced the Global Governance Initiative at the SCO Plus Meeting in Tianjin. Since its launch, China asserts that this initiative has garnered support from numerous countries and international organizations. The ongoing dialogue at the SCO Plus Meeting underscores China’s commitment to promoting a more inclusive and equitable global order, reflecting its strategic interests in shaping the future of international relations.
