British Steel Supplies Turkey’s Green Rail Revolution With Scunthorpe-Made Steel

Published on

A landmark export deal has seen British Steel commit to supplying 36,000 tonnes of rail for one of Turkey’s greenest and most ambitious transport projects — a high-speed electric railway connecting Ankara and İzmir. The agreement, described by the company as an “eight-figure” deal, represents a major vote of confidence in the Scunthorpe steelworks and the quality of British-made rail.
The 599km railway corridor is designed to transform travel between Turkey’s capital and its western Aegean coast, cutting journey times significantly while reducing reliance on road and air transport. As countries around the world invest in electrified rail to meet climate goals, British Steel is positioning itself as a key global supplier of the infrastructure that makes such ambitions possible.
The commercial benefits of the deal have already been felt in Scunthorpe. British Steel created 23 new roles specifically because of the contract, and the site has returned to continuous, 24-hour rail production — something not seen there in well over a decade. For a workforce of around 3,500 people who have faced prolonged uncertainty, these are tangible signs of progress.
UK Export Finance supported the transaction, reflecting the government’s broader interest in seeing British Steel succeed on the international stage. However, there is an inherent tension in that position: while promoting exports, the same government is simultaneously grappling with daily losses of £1.2 million at the plant it now controls. Total losses since the emergency takeover now stand at £359 million.
Industry voices say the deal is a proof of concept — evidence that British Steel has the capability, the relationships, and the product quality to compete globally. But they also warn that structural reforms, including energy cost support and stronger import safeguards, must accompany commercial wins if the plant is to have a genuinely sustainable future.
