China is set to enhance its import strategy during the 15th Five-Year Plan period from 2026 to 2030, focusing on advanced technology, essential industrial components, energy resources, and premium agricultural products. The initiative, outlined by the General Administration of Customs, aims to bolster industrial modernization, stimulate domestic consumption, and offer Chinese consumers a broader selection of high-quality global products. A significant aspect of the plan is diversifying the countries from which China sources its imports.
The first half of the year saw China’s imports and exports both achieve double-digit growth, with imports growing faster than exports. This trend is attributed to an increase in domestic demand for advanced equipment, technology, and consumer goods. The country plans to further open its market to foreign agricultural and food products by simplifying quarantine and import approval processes. Since the beginning of the year, China has granted market access to 264 categories of agricultural and food products from 79 new countries, expanding its import sources to over 150 countries and regions.
Chinese experts emphasize that this strategy underscores the nation’s dedication to enhanced market openness, diversified trade, and stronger global economic collaboration. They argue that boosting imports is essential for meeting the needs of industrial upgrades and providing higher-quality consumer goods, thereby generating new opportunities for international exporters.
Officials anticipate that China’s expanding consumer market will present increased opportunities for global businesses, as domestic consumption continues its upward trajectory. This expansion is seen as a commitment to not only meet domestic demand but also to foster greater international trade relationships.
