In a major coup for Meta, the company has successfully recruited Alan Dye, Apple’s chief of user interface design since 2015. Dye’s decision to leave Apple after nearly 20 years represents one of the most significant talent moves in the tech industry this year. He will officially join Meta on December 31st, bringing decades of design expertise to the social media giant.
Mark Zuckerberg announced the hire on Threads, outlining plans for a new creative studio within Reality Labs. This studio will focus on combining design excellence with fashion sensibilities and technological innovation. Zuckerberg emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader effort to elevate design across Meta’s entire organization, making it a competitive advantage.
Apple confirmed Dye’s departure, with CEO Tim Cook announcing that veteran designer Stephen Lemay would step into the leadership role. This transition marks a notable shift in Apple’s creative direction. Dye’s track record of creating intuitive and elegant user interfaces will now be applied to Meta’s growing portfolio of products and experiences.
The Meta CEO outlined a vision for a future dominated by AI glasses and other innovative devices that will transform how people connect. Dye’s new studio will assemble talented individuals with exceptional skills in multiple disciplines, from craft to creative vision to systems thinking. The goal is to create products that are not only technologically advanced but also beautifully designed and deeply intuitive, positioning Meta to compete more effectively in design-driven markets.
