Taiwan to Distribute NT$10,000 Cash Payments to Residents Starting January 2027

Published on

Taiwan is gearing up to distribute a one-time cash payment of NT$10,000 (approximately US$315) to eligible residents starting January 26, 2027, contingent upon the approval of the proposed 2027 central government budget. This initiative is part of the government’s strategy to share the economic benefits derived from the growth of the artificial intelligence industry, which has bolstered tax revenues.

The Cabinet has earmarked NT$235.7 billion in the proposed budget for this purpose, ensuring that the funds adhere to fiscal discipline and legal procedures without necessitating additional borrowing. Eligible recipients include Taiwanese citizens with household registration, foreign nationals holding permanent residency, and certain residents with valid residence permits. Additionally, the program extends to eligible spouses of Taiwanese citizens from China, Hong Kong, Macau, and other countries, as well as Taiwanese government employees serving overseas and their eligible dependents.

The government has outlined five payment options: bank-account registration, ATM withdrawals, post office withdrawals, direct deposits, and roster-based payments. A network of 17 financial institutions is expected to facilitate ATM withdrawals, making the process accessible to a broad audience.

The timeline for the rollout hinges on legislative approval of the budget by January 5, followed by presidential promulgation by January 20. Should these conditions be met, pre-registration for the payments could commence on January 20, with bank deposit registrations available from January 25. Payments via pre-registration, direct deposits, and roster-based distribution are slated to begin on January 26.

ATM withdrawals are projected to start on February 15, 2027, while post office withdrawals are scheduled for February 22. The general deadline for claiming the payment is set for August 31, 2027. However, eligible newborns born by the end of 2027 will have until January 31, 2028, to receive the payment.
