China has expressed approval of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comments regarding India’s autonomous foreign policy, following his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the BRICS Summit held in New Delhi. The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, highlighted Beijing’s appreciation for Modi’s assertion that India’s relationship with China will remain uninfluenced by external nations. The discussions underscored a shared understanding that China and India should maintain a partnership and mutually support each other’s growth.

During the meeting, President Xi acknowledged the distinct national circumstances of China and India. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing cooperative efforts while managing any divergences through a framework of mutual respect and understanding. This dialogue marks a continued effort by both nations to focus on collaboration despite existing differences.

India reiterated the importance of peace and stability along its border with China as a foundational element for enhancing bilateral ties. Prime Minister Modi underscored the need for adherence to existing agreements and understandings concerning border disputes. Both nations are committed to working towards a resolution that is equitable and mutually agreeable, with an emphasis on ensuring that differences do not escalate into conflicts.

The meeting takes place against the backdrop of longstanding tensions along the Line of Actual Control. In October 2024, India and China reached a significant agreement aimed at disengaging troops from several contentious areas in the Ladakh sector, a move that has contributed to easing a prolonged military standoff. This step marked a critical advancement in reducing hostilities between the two countries.
