Typhoon Champi Grounds 977 Flights, Halts Ferry Services in Taiwan

Published on

As Typhoon Champi approached Taiwan, the island experienced significant disruptions in its travel networks, leading to the cancellation of 977 flights and the suspension of 96 ferry services. These cancellations spanned both domestic and international routes, severely affecting Taiwan’s major airports and ferry connections.

Between the previous day and 10 a.m. the following morning, 262 domestic flights and 715 international and cross-strait services were cancelled. Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport bore the brunt of these disruptions, with 596 flights cancelled from midnight to 9 a.m., including 521 passenger flights and 75 cargo flights.

Airlines responded to the adverse weather conditions by adjusting their schedules. EVA Air canceled all of its long-haul flights between Taiwan and Europe or the United States later that day, alongside selected services at Taoyuan and Taipei Songshan airports. Starlux Airlines also made adjustments, operating only selected long-haul flights to Europe, the United States, and other destinations. Travelers were advised to verify flight schedules due to potential delays or rescheduling caused by the severe weather.

Maritime transport faced similar challenges, with services on nine ferry routes entirely suspended. These routes included connections between Keelung and Matsu, as well as several routes linking Taiwan to nearby Chinese coastal ports. Domestic ferry services between Kaohsiung, Magong, Donggang, Xiaoliuqiu, Green Island, and Lanyu were also affected. The Kinmen-Wutong ferry route operated on a reduced schedule, with only 10 sailings proceeding while 14 were canceled.

The disruptions underscore the impact Typhoon Champi has had on Taiwan’s aviation and maritime sectors. As the situation evolves, travelers are urged to stay informed through official updates to navigate the ongoing weather-related challenges effectively.
