EU Parliament Backs Taiwan’s Global Engagement, Criticizes China’s Restrictions

Published on

The European Parliament’s recent recommendation supporting Taiwan’s international participation and cooperation has been warmly received by Taiwan. This move rejects China’s attempts to limit Taiwan’s involvement in international organizations and exchanges, while simultaneously advocating for peace across the Taiwan Strait and enhanced collaboration between Taiwan and the European Union.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the recommendation underscores shared democratic values and the existing economic, trade, and technological connections between Taiwan and the EU. It also calls attention to China’s alleged exertion of pressure to curtail Taiwan’s global engagement and raises alarms over the extraterritorial application of Chinese legislation.

The European Parliament further acknowledges Taiwan’s crucial role in the global semiconductor industry and high-tech supply chains, urging stronger EU-Taiwan cooperation in sectors such as semiconductors, cybersecurity, and economic security. The recommendation suggests that the EU should initiate negotiations on a bilateral investment agreement or another framework aimed at bolstering cooperation on critical supply chains.

Taiwan expressed gratitude for the European Parliament’s ongoing focus on its international involvement and regional stability. Taiwan’s foreign ministry reiterated its commitment to working alongside the EU and other like-minded partners to enhance technological cooperation, safeguard critical supply chains, and counter foreign information manipulation.

This development highlights the increasing significance of Taiwan-EU relations amid broader geopolitical tensions and concerns about the security of global technology and trade networks. As the international landscape evolves, Taiwan and the EU appear poised to deepen their partnership in areas of mutual interest and strategic importance.
