In a diplomatic push during Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s recent tour of Nordic countries, leaders from Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway have implored China to leverage its diplomatic clout to help bring an end to Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The call for action was particularly prominent during Wang Yi’s discussions in Oslo, where Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre emphasized the importance of China’s role in facilitating a ceasefire and meaningful peace talks. Støre, however, expressed unease over China’s continued economic engagements with Russia, especially through energy transactions.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide highlighted that Nordic nations had collectively urged China to encourage Russia to engage in negotiations without setting preconditions. This unified stance reflects the broader concern within the region about the ongoing conflict and its implications for global stability. Wang Yi’s five-day diplomatic mission throughout the Nordic countries highlighted China’s increasing engagement with this part of the world amid ongoing global geopolitical tensions.
