A significant infrastructure development in Taipei is set to enhance connectivity and reduce travel times in the region. The newly opened Shengji Tunnel, linking Zhongxiao East Road with the access road to the National Biotechnology Research Park, promises to ease traffic congestion in Nangang District and improve the commute to New Taipei City’s Sijhih District.
The tunnel, which comes with a price tag of NT$1.878 billion, spans approximately 824 meters, with a 716-meter tunnel section. It aims to streamline traffic flow on Zhongxiao East Road Section 7 and Academia Road. This new route is expected to cut down travel time during peak hours between the research park and the vicinity of Nangang Station from 15–20 minutes to under 10 minutes.
Aside from its role in reducing congestion, the Shengji Tunnel also serves as an alternative route during adverse conditions such as flooding on Academia Road, thus enhancing the area’s overall resilience. It also caters to non-motorized traffic, featuring a separate pathway for pedestrians and cyclists.
The opening of the National Biotechnology Research Park in 2018 has been a catalyst for growth in biomedical research and biotechnology in Nangang, attracting over 2,600 researchers and professionals. The new tunnel is expected to further support this burgeoning sector by improving access and connectivity.
