During a three-day visit to Belize, Taiwanese Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung and his Belizean counterpart, Francis Fonseca, met to sign two agreements aimed at deepening the partnership between Taiwan and Belize. The agreements focus on educational and diplomatic cooperation, marking a significant step in strengthening ties between the two nations.
One of the key agreements involved the establishment of the Taiwan-Caribbean Academy, which will be based at the University of Belize. This initiative is the result of a letter of intent signed between the University of Belize and Taiwan’s International Cooperation and Development Fund. The academy will concentrate on areas such as technical and vocational education, sustainable tourism, and economic cooperation, with the aim of benefiting Taiwan’s diplomatic partners in the Caribbean region. Taiwanese universities will contribute to the development of the academy’s curriculum and faculty planning.
In addition to the educational collaboration, Taiwan and Belize also signed an agreement to enhance cooperation in diplomatic staff training. This initiative is intended to bolster the professional skills and capabilities of Belize’s foreign service personnel, further solidifying the diplomatic relationship between the two countries.
The visit and subsequent agreements underscore Taiwan’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its diplomatic ties in the region, amidst a backdrop of increasing international diplomatic challenges. The collaboration in education and diplomatic training highlights the mutual benefits and shared interests of Taiwan and Belize in fostering sustainable development and professional growth.
