Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry has strongly reaffirmed the island’s sovereignty following criticism from China regarding President Lai Ching-te’s National Day speech. In his address, President Lai emphasized Taiwan’s independent governance, a stance that Beijing claims exacerbates tensions across the Taiwan Strait and threatens regional stability.
The ministry firmly stated that Taiwan and China are distinct entities that do not answer to each other. It underlined the importance of Taiwan’s future being determined by its 23 million residents, rejecting any form of interference from Beijing in its political affairs. The call for respect extends to acknowledging Taiwan’s democratic system and political differences.
In response to China’s accusations, Taiwan urged Beijing to refrain from actions that could heighten tensions or attempts to alter the status quo through force. The Taiwanese government stressed its dedication to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and throughout the broader Indo-Pacific region.
Moreover, Taiwan committed to enhancing its cooperation with democratic nations globally. This initiative aims to fortify Taiwan’s sovereignty and promote its long-term development, reinforcing its position on the international stage.
