Taiwan Prepares for Possible Sea and Land Warnings as Typhoon Champi Approaches

Published on

Taiwan is bracing for the potential impact of Typhoon Champi, which could bring heavy rainfall to various parts of the island later this week. The Central Weather Bureau may issue a sea warning as early as Wednesday night, with the possibility of a land warning following on Thursday night or Friday.

As the typhoon approaches, it is expected to have its greatest impact on Friday and Saturday. Forecasts indicate that central and northern Taiwan, along with Yilan and Hualien counties in the east, could experience significant rainfall. Champi is currently moving west-northwest at a speed of approximately 20 kilometers per hour, boasting maximum sustained winds of 191 kilometers per hour.

The path of Typhoon Champi remains uncertain, with meteorological models suggesting several potential routes. It could make landfall in eastern Taiwan, veer north before reaching the island, or take a more southerly course through the Bashi Channel, which lies between Taiwan and the Philippines. The exact trajectory will depend in part on changes within the Pacific high-pressure system, which could influence the storm’s direction.

For now, weather conditions across Taiwan are expected to remain relatively stable until the typhoon nears. However, isolated showers may occur in some coastal and eastern areas ahead of the storm’s arrival.
