The National Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology in Taiwan has unveiled the technical details of its latest defense project, the Chiang Kung missile, also known as the Tien Chien IV. This high-altitude interceptor is poised to become a crucial component of Taiwan’s envisioned “T-Dome” integrated air defense network. Engineered to counter ballistic missile threats, the Chiang Kung is capable of intercepting targets up to an altitude of 70 kilometers. It employs a land-based vertical launch system coupled with a two-stage solid-propellant rocket, enhanced by vectored thrust to boost its maneuverability at elevated altitudes.
The missile’s radar system is designed to identify various target types and engage multiple tactical ballistic missiles simultaneously, even amidst electronic warfare challenges. Additionally, the system features a mobile active electronically scanned array radar, specifically built to maintain functionality in environments plagued by electromagnetic interference and GPS jamming. With these technological advancements, the Chiang Kung is set to deliver a much-needed high-altitude interception capability, augmenting Taiwan’s existing air-defense infrastructure within the planned T-Dome network.
Despite its promising capabilities, the Chiang Kung missile program is grappling with budgetary hurdles. Notably, it was omitted from Taiwan’s special defense budget, compelling the Ministry of National Defense to pursue alternative funding through a supplementary budget. Officials have raised concerns that any delays in securing these funds could disrupt the acquisition timeline and impede the broader development of the T-Dome network.
The anticipated addition of the Chiang Kung missile to Taiwan’s defense arsenal underscores the island’s ongoing efforts to bolster its security posture amid regional tensions. By integrating this advanced interceptor into its defense framework, Taiwan aims to enhance its ability to counter high-altitude threats, thereby strengthening its comprehensive air defense strategy. However, the success of this initiative hinges on timely financial backing to ensure the project’s seamless progression and integration into the T-Dome network.
