Adams Adopts Controversial Antisemitism Definition Before Key Election

Published on

New York City Mayor Eric Adams signed a significant executive order requiring city agencies to use the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism. The policy announcement at a synagogue ceremony came as Adams sought to demonstrate leadership on combating anti-Jewish hatred while facing intense political pressure from corruption investigations and low approval ratings.
The IHRA definition has drawn criticism due to examples that could potentially classify legitimate criticism of Israeli policies as antisemitic behavior. Critics worry that provisions identifying questioning Israel’s right to exist or applying different standards to Israel as forms of antisemitism might be misused to silence free expression, particularly on college campuses where Middle East issues are frequently debated.
With the Democratic primary just weeks away, Adams’ policy decision comes as he faces strong opposition from candidates with opposing views on Israel-Palestine issues. Former Governor Cuomo has positioned himself as a steadfast supporter of Israel, even joining Netanyahu’s legal defense team, while progressive candidate Mamdani has been highly critical of Israeli actions and has called for accountability regarding what he terms war crimes.
