“Enough is Enough”: Trump Rebukes Israeli Annexation Ambitions

Published on

Donald Trump delivered a sharp rebuke to Israeli annexation ambitions, declaring “there’s been enough” and that he would not permit the absorption of the West Bank. This forceful statement from the Oval Office represents a significant intervention, directly countering the agenda of far-right politicians within Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government who have been advocating for such a move.
Netanyahu, who was landing in New York for a UN speech as the news broke, now faces a serious challenge. His governing coalition relies on the support of ultra-nationalists who are demanding annexation. Trump’s public veto forces the Israeli leader into a difficult balancing act between his domestic political survival and his relationship with the United States.
The president’s decision appears to be a direct result of a successful, multi-pronged lobbying effort. European nations like the UK and France, which had recently recognized Palestine, feared Trump would respond by recognizing Israeli settlements. Their concerns were echoed by Arab leaders, who warned the US president of the severe, destabilizing impact that annexation would have on the entire region.
The core of the conflict revolves around the occupied West Bank, where about 700,000 Israeli settlers live. These settlements, considered illegal by most international bodies, have been a persistent obstacle to peace. Projects such as the controversial E1 plan are seen as strategic efforts to prevent the formation of a viable Palestinian state by fragmenting its territory.
This policy directive is unfolding as the United States pursues a separate but related goal: ending the war in Gaza. A 21-point peace framework has been proposed to key regional partners. Trump voiced confidence that a deal was possible, emphasizing his desire to see hostages returned and peace restored after a conflict that has resulted in a catastrophic humanitarian crisis and the deaths of over 65,000 Palestinians.
