Taiwan’s representative office in Papua New Guinea remains operational despite a directive from the Papua New Guinea government to close the mission, according to Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry. The Taiwanese representative, Chiu Chen-yu, continues to engage with officials from Papua New Guinea’s Department of Foreign Affairs, with no major interruptions reported.
The order for closure was announced by Papua New Guinea’s Foreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko in July. Taiwan expressed that it was not consulted prior to this decision and has lodged a formal protest against the move. Despite the order, Taiwan’s office has maintained its functions, illustrating ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the situation.
Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry emphasized its readiness to respond to various developments while striving for continued dialogue with Papua New Guinea. The ministry is also seeking support from other nations to foster discussions that could keep the representative office in Port Moresby open.
This diplomatic incident highlights the complex international relationships involving Taiwan, as it navigates its unofficial diplomatic presence around the world. The situation remains delicate, with Taiwan advocating for dialogue and collaboration in hopes of maintaining its representation in Papua New Guinea.
