China has expressed approval of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comments regarding India’s autonomous foreign policy, following his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the BRICS Summit held in New Delhi. The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, highlighted Beijing’s appreciation for Modi’s assertion that India’s relationship with China will remain uninfluenced by external nations. The discussions underscored a shared understanding that China and India should maintain a partnership and mutually support each other’s growth.

During the meeting, President Xi acknowledged the distinct national circumstances of China and India. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing cooperative efforts while managing any divergences through a framework of mutual respect and understanding. In October 2024, India and China reached a significant agreement aimed at disengaging troops from several contentious areas in the Ladakh sector, a move that has contributed to easing a prolonged military standoff.
