Levi’s Warns: Trump’s America Could Lose Its Cool in the UK

Published on

The quintessential American cool embodied by Levi’s jeans could be under threat in the UK, according to the company itself. Levi Strauss UK has issued a formal warning that “rising anti-Americanism” linked to President Trump’s policies might drive British consumers to abandon the brand for European alternatives.
This cautionary statement was a key part of the “risks and uncertainties” section in its latest financial accounts. It stands in stark contrast to the company’s current robust health, which includes an 8.8% sales increase to £96.8 million and a 23% jump in pre-tax profits. The brand acknowledges its current appeal but is wary of the future political climate.
This is more than just a hypothetical threat. Recent figures show Tesla, another high-profile US brand, saw its UK sales more than halve in July, indicating a potential shift in consumer behaviour. This trend is even more pronounced in Canada, where protests against US goods have led some retailers to pull products like Jack Daniel’s whiskey from their shelves.
The genesis of this anti-American sentiment is the Trump administration’s aggressive trade war, which has imposed tariffs on allies and prompted retaliatory measures. The entire strategy’s legal foundation is now in question following a federal appeals court ruling that deemed the tariffs mostly illegal, a decision that is likely to be escalated to the nation’s highest court.
