Taiwan’s Economy Braces for Impact from Record June Rainfall Since 2012.

This year’s plum rain season has left Taiwan drenched, marking its wettest period in over a decade. Across the nation, rainfall levels soared to rates not seen since 2012, with Taipei experiencing unprecedented precipitation in June. Meteorological data highlights that from May to June, the island received an average rainfall of 609.9 millimeters, a significant increase from the historical norm of 440.7 millimeters. The intense downpours were the result of stationary weather fronts, strong southwesterly winds, and the impact of a tropical storm.

The southern regions of Taiwan bore the brunt of these heavy rains, notably areas within Pingtung County, where rainfall measurements reached nearly 1,000 millimeters over just three days in early June. Some locations recorded between 400 and 800 millimeters during this period. Meanwhile, Taipei shattered its June rainfall record, amassing a total of 870.5 millimeters, the highest since records began in 1897.

Looking forward, weather experts predict that temperatures will hover around normal or slightly above normal through September. Rainfall is anticipated to align with seasonal averages. However, the potential for three to five tropical storms or typhoons to approach Taiwan remains, especially in the latter half of the year. Forecasters are keeping a close eye on El Niño conditions developing in the Pacific Ocean, which could strengthen tropical storms by allowing them to gather intensity over warm ocean waters before nearing the island.

With the official start of Taiwan’s typhoon season on July 1, authorities are implementing new warning systems for coastal waves to enhance public safety during severe weather events. These measures come in response to the increased likelihood of intense storms, underscoring the importance of preparedness in the face of potentially hazardous weather patterns.
