The UK government has received a boost as Lotus officially committed to its Hethel plant in Norfolk, dispelling fears of a manufacturing exodus to the US. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds secured this pledge during an urgent meeting with the sports car maker and its Chinese parent, Geely, ensuring the preservation of 1,300 jobs.
Concerns arose after Lotus paused production at Hethel in mid-May, with reports suggesting a US relocation was under consideration due to tariffs. However, a Department for Business and Trade spokesperson confirmed Reynolds “was reassured by management that they are committed to their UK operations and have no plans to close their Hethel plant.”
Lotus is now set to resume production as US import tariffs are lowered, making exports of its Emira sports car to the US, its largest market, more viable. The company had previously stated that “the UK is the heart of the Lotus brand,” emphasizing its strong connection to its British heritage.
The commitment from Lotus aligns with the government’s industrial strategy, which aims to strengthen key sectors like automotive through various support mechanisms, including substantial R&D funding. This ensures the continued vitality of the Hethel facility as a hub for advanced automotive engineering.
