Cheng Li-wun, a prominent opposition leader from Taiwan, has expressed her openness to meeting U.S. President Donald Trump during her upcoming visit to the United States. She emphasized her readiness to engage with any leader who can aid in fostering peace and stability in the region. Prior to embarking on her two-week journey, Cheng highlighted the significance of dialogue with powerful global figures as a means to advance peace. She mentioned that her willingness to meet with Trump aligns with the approach she took during her recent conversations with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Throughout her visit, Cheng plans to engage with U.S. lawmakers and government officials, including a stop in Washington. However, she remained tight-lipped about her specific meeting schedule. Cheng voiced her approval of the recent improvements in U.S.-China relations, expressing optimism that enhanced dialogue between major powers could mitigate regional tensions.

Regarding Taiwan’s security policy, Cheng underscored the importance of bolstering defense capabilities. Nonetheless, she argued that enduring security also hinges on communication with Beijing. She emphasized that dialogue is crucial in minimizing the risk of military conflict and ensuring stability across the Taiwan Strait.

This visit occurs amidst ongoing discussions in Taiwan concerning defense spending and cross-strait relations. Opposition parties are advocating for a balanced approach that combines military preparedness with diplomatic engagement. Cheng’s stance reflects this sentiment, as she advocates for both strengthening defense and maintaining open channels of communication with China.
