Geopolitical Chess: Russia Offers Su-57 to India as US Imposes Oil Tariffs

Published on

In a classic geopolitical maneuver, Russia has offered India co-production of its advanced Su-57 fighter jet just as the US tightens economic screws on New Delhi. The US recently slapped 50% tariffs on India, explicitly linking half of the penalty to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil.
This economic pressure was followed by a verbal volley from Donald Trump, who claimed PM Modi had “assured” him of stopping Russian oil imports.
Russia’s response was two-fold. Ambassador Denis Alipov first dismissed the oil speculation, stating the supplies are “beneficial” for India’s economy. He then unveiled a major defense package, sweetening the partnership.
Alipov emphasized the “full technology-sharing arrangements” that already exist, citing the BrahMos missile and Su-30 jets. He then offered the Su-57, drones, and anti-drone systems as the next logical step.
This move forces India to weigh its options: bow to US pressure and tariffs, or double down on its long-standing, “battle-tested” defense and energy relationship with Moscow. India’s MEA has so far held the line, citing “national interest” as its only guide.
