Musk’s xAI Facility to Become Major Mississippi Polluter Following Permit Win

Published on

Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has received a controversial permit to run 41 methane gas turbines at its Colossus 2 site. This approval from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality allows the company to nearly double its on-site power generation. The decision has left local environmental advocates “outraged” and fearing for the region’s air quality.
The energy generated will support the company’s “AI supercomputers,” which are essential for running the Grok AI model. These supercomputing clusters are some of the most power-hungry machines in existence today. By building a private power plant, xAI can ensure its chips remain operational 24/7 without taxing the public grid.
The permit process was marked by intense community opposition, with hundreds of residents speaking out against the project. Many locals complained that the facility was built too quickly and without regard for the surrounding residential areas. The NAACP has accused state regulators of prioritizing corporate interests over the health of the local population.
The turbines emit fine particulate matter and hazardous chemicals such as nitrogen oxide, which are linked to heart attacks and asthma. The Southern Environmental Law Center stated that this facility could become one of the largest fossil fuel power plants in the state. This is a major concern for DeSoto and Shelby counties, both of which already have failing air quality grades.
xAI’s aggressive expansion in the South shows no signs of stopping, with three separate datacenters now part of its local portfolio. The “Macrohardrr” project is the latest addition to this growing industrial hub. However, the legal challenges from civil rights groups ensure that Musk’s energy strategy will remain under intense scrutiny.
