Taiwan Launches Global Alliance, Boosting Disaster Management Industry Growth

Published on

In a world where natural disasters increasingly cross borders, global cooperation in disaster management has become essential. This need for collaboration was underscored as Taiwan welcomed international disaster management officials and experts to Taipei for the launch of the World Alliance for Disaster Management (WADM), a new initiative aimed at enhancing disaster preparedness and response globally.

The initiative aims to unite a diverse array of stakeholders, including governments, emergency response agencies, businesses, academic institutions, and civil society organizations. By fostering partnerships, WADM seeks to improve disaster prevention, early warning systems, emergency response, and recovery efforts across nations.

Speaking at the event, Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung emphasized the critical role of international cooperation in building resilience to disasters. He noted that disasters and their associated risks do not respect national boundaries, making it imperative for countries to work together to bolster preparedness and response capabilities.

Interior Minister Liu Shyh-fang highlighted Taiwan’s past experiences with receiving international assistance, particularly following the devastating 1999 Jiji earthquake. She affirmed Taiwan’s readiness to share its expertise in disaster response through professional training programs and joint exercises with other nations.

The WADM is expected to facilitate information sharing, capacity building, and practical cooperation among its members, bolstering the global community’s ability to manage and mitigate the effects of natural disasters more effectively.
