Gulf States Turn to Ukraine as the World’s Best Hope Against Iranian Drones

Published on

As Iranian Shahed drones proliferate across the Middle East, an unlikely nation has emerged as the world’s leading authority on stopping them: Ukraine. President Zelenskyy announced this week that his country will provide the United States and multiple Gulf states with the expertise and equipment needed to counter the drone threat.
Zelenskyy confirmed conversations with the leaders of the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait — nations that are either already facing Iranian drone threats or are deeply concerned about their spread. The discussions reflect a rapid reorientation of Gulf security partnerships, with Kyiv emerging as a credible provider of cutting-edge, battle-tested defense solutions.
Ukraine’s credentials are formidable. Russia has launched tens of thousands of Iranian-made Shaheds against Ukrainian targets over more than four years of war. In response, Ukrainian engineers developed interceptor drones that cost as little as $1,000 and are specifically designed to hunt and destroy these threats. The contrast with Western air defense systems, which often cost millions of dollars per engagement, has made Ukraine’s approach globally attractive.
The strategic implications are profound. By tying its defense assistance to diplomatic support for its own war effort, Ukraine is effectively converting its technological advantage into political leverage. Nations that receive Ukrainian help are expected to reciprocate by backing Kyiv’s efforts to secure peace on terms favorable to Ukraine.
Zelenskyy also addressed the broader geopolitical context, acknowledging that planned Russia-Ukraine peace talks have been postponed due to the Iran crisis. He called on the US to recognize the interconnected nature of the conflicts, warning that Russia and Iran are acting in concert to undermine regional and global stability. Despite these challenges, he pointed to recent Ukrainian military gains as evidence of resilience on the front lines.
