Panama Establishes Economic Alliance Group for Enhanced Taiwan Trade Relations

Published on

In a significant development for international parliamentary relations, Panama’s National Assembly has initiated a new multiparty interparliamentary friendship group with Taiwan’s legislative body. This move aims to foster dialogue and enhance bilateral cooperation between the two nations. The newly formed group comprises 45 out of Panama’s 71 lawmakers, which accounts for over 60% of the assembly’s membership. Notably, the group includes prominent figures such as National Assembly President Shirley Castañedas, alongside Vice Presidents Manuel Cohen and Manuel Cheng.

The establishment of this friendship group comes in the wake of over 20 Panamanian lawmakers visiting Taiwan within the last six months. This initiative marks a significant step, especially given Panama’s decision to sever formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan in June 2017. The formation of this parliamentary platform signifies a renewed interest in strengthening connections despite the absence of official diplomatic relations.

Taiwan has expressed its approval of this initiative, highlighting its potential to bolster parliamentary diplomacy and foster cooperation rooted in shared values. These values encompass democracy, freedom, and the respect for human rights. The creation of this group is seen as an opportunity to expand collaborative efforts in areas of mutual interest, promoting a more robust dialogue between the two sides.

The friendship group is anticipated to serve as a conduit for enhancing people-to-people ties and facilitating greater collaboration. Its establishment underscores a commitment from both Panama and Taiwan to explore new avenues for partnership and exchange, even in the face of past diplomatic shifts. The initiative reflects a strategic approach to building bridges and fostering understanding on a parliamentary level, setting a foundation for potential future engagements.
