Trump to Address Taiwan Arms Deals, Jimmy Lai Impact with Xi

Published on

In a statement from the White House, U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to address several key issues with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his upcoming visit to Beijing. Among the topics on the agenda are the United States’ arms sales to Taiwan and the case of Jimmy Lai, a prominent Hong Kong media tycoon currently imprisoned. The discussion comes on the heels of an announcement made by Trump in December, unveiling the largest arms deal to Taiwan to date, valued at over $11 billion. Trump’s administration has been pushing for Taiwan to increase its defense budget, and a senior U.S. official indicated that the forthcoming talks with Xi do not signal any shift in Washington’s Taiwan policy.

Trump expressed confidence that tensions over Taiwan would not escalate during his presidency, emphasizing his positive rapport with President Xi. “I don’t think it’ll happen,” he remarked regarding potential conflict, suggesting a level of assurance that diplomatic relations would maintain stability. This discussion is set against a backdrop of longstanding U.S. support for Taiwan’s defense, a point of contention with China, which opposes arms sales to the island nation.

Another significant matter Trump plans to discuss with Xi is the incarceration of Jimmy Lai, a fervent pro-democracy advocate and a critical voice against China’s influence in Hong Kong. Lai, who founded the now-defunct Apple Daily newspaper, was sentenced to 20 years in prison on charges including conspiracy to collude with foreign forces and publishing seditious content. Trump’s comments reflect ongoing international concern over the impact of Hong Kong’s national security law, which has attracted criticism from various governments and human rights organizations.

President Trump also indicated his intention to raise the issue of Pastor Jin Mingri, the founder of Zion Church, who was arrested in the previous year. This arrest followed the introduction of new regulations by China’s top religious authority, which prohibit unauthorized online religious activities and foreign involvement in religious affairs. The crackdown on Zion Church underscores the broader context of China’s tightening control over religious practices within the country.

As Trump prepares for his diplomatic engagement with Xi, these discussions highlight critical points of tension between the United States and China, particularly concerning regional security dynamics and human rights issues. The outcomes of these talks could potentially influence the ongoing dialogue and future interactions between the two global powers.
